P.A. dancers will experience the magic of Disney

Dancers from a studio in Prince Albert are going on the trip of a lifetime this summer.

From June 28 until July 1, around 40 dancers from The Performing Arts Warehouse will be performing jazz-dance routines in Disney World.

The dancers aged seven to 17 will join other dancers from across North America in training camps, a show and hopefully the Magical Kingdom Parade.

“It’s pretty magical that they get to dance in a parade, not only are they dancing in the parade…we’re taking workshops from professionals while down there,” said Jenna Malach, co-owner, dance teacher and artistic director of the studio. “[Also] we get to be part of the Disney Hollywood Studio Show. We get a 20 minute time slot to put our best numbers out there.”

Karyza Smith, 11, said other than meeting Mickey and Minnie Mouse she is most excited to dance in the parade.

“It’s fun to just learn moves and different things,” said Smith.

Despite the excitement surrounding the parade performance, Malach said the guidelines for the parade are fairly strict and the studio must send in an audition tape by April to be guaranteed a spot.

“No tattoos showing, minimal earrings, like their very precise on how they want it to look. They’ve given us the dimensions of inches between each dancer,” said Malach. “The dancers have to be approved to be in the parade so we have to prove to them that we know our stuff to be in.”

Per dancer the trip costs around $2,000 so the studio is looking for community support through fundraising.

On Jan. 24 the studio will host a family and teen dance night at the Art Hauser Centre in the Ches Leach lounge. The family dance costs $20 per family and will run from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. and the teen dance will follow from 9 p.m. until 1 a.m. and costs $15 per person.
