Northern Women’s Curling playdowns hit PA

The Prince Albert Golf and Curling club will host two high profile events over the next two weekends. This weekend it’s the Northern Women’s Curling Playdowns with three of the ten teams advancing to the Provincial Scotties Tournament of Hearts beginning January 21st in Assiniboia.

Bryan Rindal said there are two high profile teams in the ladies field.

“The Trish Paulson team (Saskatoon Nutana) was a Provincial Junior winner at one point and then we have Jill Shumay (Maidstone) coming who represented Saskatchewan two or three years ago at the Scotties (Provincial Ladies Championships).

Rindal points out adding the Men’s North East Region playdowns makes it quite a unique weekend for the Prince Albert venue.

“This is the first time they have run the Northern women’s and the regional men’s at the same time.” said Rindal who pointed out the local club is blazing another trail with Prince Albert also hosting the Northern Men’s playdowns next weekend.

“This is also the first time we have done the Northern women’s and Northern men’s a week apart at the same venue.” said Rindal who called it a big vote of confidence from Curlsask, the provincial governing body.

“It’s a big feather in the cap to our town and to the golf and curling club. Curlsask knows that Prince Albert will come together and put on a good show and we will have all kinds of spectators out and everybody will be having some fun, enjoying the curling.”

In addition to Shumay and Paulson, the Ladies field includes Unity’s Debbie Folk, Nutana’s Alyssa Despins, Robyn Silvernagle. Rachel Fritzler, Sherry Just and Jessica Hanson of the Saskatoon Granite Club, Teandra Friesen of Saskatoon CN and North Battleford’s Nicole Beausoleil.

The first draws in both the Ladies Northerns and Men’s Regionals are Friday at 4pm.
