Visitors to Regina senior’s home surprised by assault and neglect investigation

Dec 15, 2014 | 6:31 AM

The Santa Maria Senior Citizens Home in Regina has suspended a number of employees after viewing a video which allegedly shows the neglect and physical assault of a resident.

Delaine Hansen was at Santa Maria visiting her 95-year-old grandmother on Sunday. Her grandmother has lived in the seniors’ home for almost a year.

“I’ve been up here a number of times and never saw that she’s had been mistreated. Everybody seems to be very nice. I was a little bit surprised about hearing everything that was going on.”

Hansen said she is now a little nervous about how her grandmother is being treated. However, the suspension of a number of employees makes her feel better.

“It also makes people that are working here aware that they are being watched and that they need to watch what they’re doing, not being able to get away with things.”

Rita has been visiting her friend Alice at Santa Maria since August. Rita said she hasn’t seen any evidence of abuse from staff.

“They look short staffed but the people are caring about them and helpful for the caregivers, I appreciate that.”

Rita said she’s not too worried about her friend staying at the care home. She said 92-year-old Alice can think for herself and knows how to ask for things she needs.
