Un-Frozen, a twist on traditional pageants

Disney’s Frozen has taken the world by storm since it hit theaters, and it’s now being used as the inspiration for a unique performance in Prince Albert.

Carlton students and a few St. Alban’s Cathedral members are coming together to perform a modern twist on a traditional Christmas pageant.

“In the history of this building they have don’t the traditional Christmas story and so yes we are doing something a little bit different but why not, were in the 21st century and let’s try something a little bit different,” said the Un-Frozen play director David Zulkoskey.

Grade 9 Ellora Haukenfrers, is really excited to play the role of Princess Olga in un-frozen, which she said somewhat mirrors the Elsa character in the Frozen movie.

The actors and actresses may be following a similar storyline but Haukenfrers said there is a major difference between their play and the hit movie.

“It’s not like the traditional love story, Disney movie, it’s more the sisterly love and family kind of plays a role in it,” she said.

Zulkoskey said his nieces, nephews and students all really loved the movie and that’s why he jumped at the chance to direct the spin-off.

“Let’s connect something that’s very popular with something that’s very traditional and well-known,” he said.

Being that so many people are familiar with Frozen, Zulkoskey said the Un-Frozen version of the play will capture the audience’s attention, while also telling the story of Jesus Christ’s birth in Bethlehem.

“(It’s) a new take on the idea of the Christmas pageant and so really were not staging the Christmas pageant story, that’s being told at the same time that the frozen story is happening,” he said. “It’s a novel way of looking at something that’s a very traditional story that I think everyone knows, or should know and it puts a little pizazz on it.”

The Carlton students will be performing Un-Frozen at the St. Alban’s Cathedral on Dec. 21 at  4 p.m.
