Tigers trip Raiders 7-4 in wild west shootout

Dec 14, 2014 | 6:25 AM

The Raiders never gave up despite arriving at 4 a.m. on game day and playing their 7th road game in 11 nights.

They couldn’t solve the line of Cole Sanford, Trevor Cox and Steven Owry who combined for 12 points in the Tigers 7-4 win at the Medicine Hat Arena.

Sanford and Cox had two goals and three assists each while Owry had one helper in addition to the empty net goal that put the game away at 19:26 of the third period.

The Tigers scored just 13-seconds into the game and opened a 2-0 lead just past the 8-minute mark. However the Raiders fought back as Jayden Hart’s deflection on a two man power play ended the Raiders 0-for-15 run with the man advantage and sparked a rally that left them two goal posts away from taking the lead. Shortly after Brendan Guhle ripped a slap shot off the iron, newcomver Jesse Lees struck the bar on a snap shot from the point.

The Tigers recovered and opened a 4-1 lead by the 3:19 mark of the second period only to see the Raiders whittle away with goals from Simon Stransky; .

After a play from rookie Brennan Riddle, Cory Millette netted his first goal as a Raider from the left wing circle.

The Tigers halted the Raider momentun on a Trevor Cox screen shot from the point with 17-seconds left in the 2nd period during the Tigers lone power play of the night.

Guhle would jump into the rush and snipe a high rising snap shot early in the third period to decrease the Tigers lead to 6-4, but despite a few chances, that’s as close as the Raiders would get to tying the game against the speedy Tigers.

The Tigers played a quick transition game and converted turnovers into odd man rushes.

Associate Coach Dave Manson told the 900 CKBI post game audience better positioning by the trailling forward can prevent transition attacks in future games and they still need to get more traffic in front of the oppositions net.

The Raiders ended the 13-day 5,600 kilometre (km) trip with a 2-4-1 record which included getting shutout in three straight games, but are 5-4-1 in their last 10 road games. .

They are off until Wednesday when they host Moose Jaw to close out the first half of the season. The Raiders will head into that game with a record of 15-17-1.

All Raider games can be heard on 900 CKBI.
