With the basketball season just starting and the Carlton Senior A boys only having six returning players, they will rely on Grade 11 Chris McLachlan.

The guard, standing at six-foot, four inches, gained early exposure to the game through his father who taught physical education.

“I went to my first ever basketball game in Grade 4 when Carlton played St.Mary’s, and I really enjoyed watching it and looking at how much fun those guys were having out there it inspired me to want to do the same one day,” McLachlan said.

He won rookie of the year last year and played in the Saskatchewan Summer Games for team Lakeland in 2012.

“It helped me grow as a player because I was playing against some of the players in Saskatchewan and when you play with better players it makes you elevate your game and become a better player,” he said.

With all of the extra work Chris puts in off the court, Coach Lindsay Strachan has nothing but positive comments.

“Chris is committed to what he wants to do, so he wants to be an elite-level basketball player. He’s at the gym at lunch, at practice time and any time that he can get in and work on his game or improve his game, he is doing that. So that is something that I really appreciate about Chris is his dedication to improving and getting better,” said Strachan.

This season Chris knows he needs to not only improve his skills on the court, but also become a leader.

“I want to become a leader on and off the court and to become a role model for the younger basketball players and also my teammates. I also want to improve my skills whether it’s shooting, dribbling or seeing the court and to understand the game better,” he said.

The Carlton boys placed last at their home tournament last weekend.   The Carlton Sr. Girls took home silver.
