Gene Makowsky and Eddie Davis heading into Hall of Fame

Two former Saskatchewan Roughriders are going to be forever enshrined in the Canadian Football Hall of Fame.

The class of 2015 was unveiled on Friday night with seven new nominees including offensive lineman Gene Makowsky and defensive back Eddie Davis.

“It’s certainly a great honour for me and my family,” said Makowsky.

“It’s a pleasure to represent the Riders once again. I’ve loved the CFL since I was a little kid, I watched games since then. You never imagine something like this would happen.”

This isn’t the first time that Makowsky and Davis have been honoured together. It was just last year they were both inducted in to the Riders Plaza of Honor in 2013.

Maybe their fate to be together for these kinds of moments was sealed back in 2007.

“When we won the Grey Cup, me and Gene actually brought the Grey Cup out at the Riders stadium. It was freezing out there but me and Gene are holding the Grey Cup. So, I think we’ll be linked to this forever, it’s just an awesome feeling,” said Davis.

Makowsky was a staple along the Riders offensive line of scrimmage for 17 seasons. Makowsky was originally drafted by the Riders 23rd overall in the 1995 CFL Draft. Over the course of his career Makowsky appeared in 284 regular season games, 16 playoff games and 4 Grey Cups, winning one in 2007.

Davis’ career was a little different from Makowsky’s. Davis came to the CFL in 1995 with the Birmingham Barracudas. After that Davis played five seasons with the Stampeders before coming to Saskatchewan. Davis finished his career with 801 tackles, 112 special teams tackles, 111 pass knockdowns 34 interceptions and 16 sacks over 236 regular season games. Davis won the Grey Cup with the Riders in 2007 and the Stampeders in 1998. Davis retired in 2009.

Also heading into the Hall of Fame in 2015 are quarterback Dave Dickenson, long-time coach and executive Bill O’Billovich, Alouettes owner Bob Wetenhall, B.C. football builder Larry Reda and amateur player Leroy Blugh.
