Local playwright pens Odyssey’s next show

When Odyssey Productions had trouble finding a play to suit its actors a few years ago, its director decided to take matters into her own hands.

Adreanna Boucher said she ended up writing the play for an Odyssey Improv Troupe booking that had requested a murder mystery.

“I couldn’t find a script that suited the actors I had so I took a week and I wrote one,” she explained.

“It went over really well that time, and Odyssey took a look at it and decided they wanted to do it this year for the Christmas show.”

The play, Modelling Can Be Murder, will resurface this year to a wider audience this year as Odyssey puts on performances in Travelodge’s ballroom from Nov. 27 to 29.

Boucher has written four plays all together that were done with the Odyssey Improve Troupe but this will be the first time one of her plays will be used in Odyssey’s regular season.

She said while writing a play it can definitely occupy your mind, time limits can push your creativity.

“You come up with a quirky idea and you just run with it.”

The play is about a painter hosting an art gala with his wife where someone ends up getting murdered, Boucher calls it a “fun who done it” kind of play.

“It’s very stylized and over the top so you can expect a lot of outrageous characters and a pretty outrageous storyline. You got the detective that comes in all mysterious and very serious, you have models and artists who are going to entertain you for the evening.”

She said the audience even has a role in the play with being question by the detective, flirted with by the hostess and are even a shoulder to cry on.

In a message she wrote, “It’s a fantastic idea for staff and social club Christmas parties or just for something a little different for a night out.”

Tickets are available at the E.A. Rawlinson Center Box Office for only $50.

The doors open at 6:30 p.m. with the show starting before 7 p.m.

Boucher said the actors will even mingle in the audience during the breaks of the show.
