Boyer brothers carrying Icehawks offence

Brett Boyer has led the Prince Albert Icehawks in both goals and points each year since he played his first full season with the club in 2012-2013.

But even though he’s 20-years-old, coming off a 34-goal season (after playing in just 32 games), his Icehawks points lead is in jeopardy this year thanks to 18-year-old rookie little brother Brendon.

As a matter of fact, Brendon came into Wednesday’s 3-0 loss against Saskatoon Royals with a one point advantage over his proven sniper of an older brother.

“Every now and then I bug him about it, just to get his nerves up,” said Brendon. “I like playing on a line with him. He helps me get those points.

“Me and Brett have been playing hockey as little kids together. We just click and have that chemistry. Now that we’re playing together, we’re bringing that out on the ice.”

Although Brett gets the occasional chirp from his younger brother, he loves having him around.

“It’s been fun,” said Brett. “The last few years, (the Icehawks) have been struggling but lately, our practices have been better and we’re starting to bond as a team.

“Now that I have him, my brother as a linemate, we’ve been doing good. It’s fun; hopefully we keep it up.”

The siblings from St. Louis have been important offensive cogs for the team this year and the numbers back it up.

All four Icehawks’ wins this year have come when both Boyer bros register at least a point in the same game, they’re 4-2 when they do. They’re 0-5 when neither score and 0-2 when just one nets a point.

They’ve scored eight goals each through 13 games, and combine for 43.2 per cent of the Icehawks’ 37 goals this season. The Boyers are also 1-2 in team assists, as Brendon has eight and Brett is right behind him at seven.

“It’s not just us, we’d like the whole team to pinch in but right now it’s me and him,” said Brett. “It’d be nice for the team to help us out, which they have been.”

Royals 3 Icehawks 0

In their only meeting this year, the Saskatoon Royals destroyed the Icehawks 10-1 on Oct. 26 in Saskatoon, but the Icehawks did well to not let history repeat itself on Wednesday.

The Icehawks stayed out of the box, were aggressive but structured in their own, and were behind on the shot clock 28-26 through two periods.

Royals forward David Yuzyk broke the tie with seven minutes remaining in the second period, to give the Royals 1-0 lead heading into the third period.

The Royals were able to break away from the Icehawks with two quick goals in the opening five minutes from Brett Armstrong and Dylan Johner.

Brendon Boyer was convinced he made it 3-1 on the power play midway through the period as his backhand dribbled past Royals goaltender Liam McOnie the puck somehow stayed out.

Busy weekend

The Icehawks will have two home games at the Kinsmen this weekend, hosting the Ochapowace Thunder on Saturday at 7:30 p.m., and the Delisle Chiefs at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday.
