Affinity doubles up Hope’s Home donation

The back play area at Hope’s Home will take shape over the next few years, thanks to $10,000 donated by Affinity Credit Union.

The Affinity Credit Union’s board of directors decided to double its previously approved funding for the daycare that caters to children with medical issues, according to Joe Rybinski. As a delegate for the local board of directors, Rybinski and Joel Bilodeau presented a cheque to the daycare on Wednesday.

Hope’s Home initiative to brighten up their back play area requires very expensive upgrades, said Jenna Baldrey, the director of operations for the non-profit.

This is because of the special medical needs of many of the children they care for.

“We need to make it wheelchair accessible in the back. So we would be looking at having like paved pathways, putting grass in the back, having other specific areas where we can plant gardens, making other play structures, again that would be, you know, wheelchair accessible and accessible to our children with medical needs and disabilities,” Baldrey explained.

Affinity “made a very conscientious decision while we reviewed a number of applications from the surrounding area to support Hope’s Home,” Rybinski explained.

The $10,000 will go towards a two-year project for the upgrades, which started in small phases last summer.

So far, a deck, play centre with a slide and swings, and other designated play areas for kids have provided “small improvements so that our children are able to really enjoy and fully experience the space outside,” Baldrey added.

Each year, Affinity Credit Union sets a budget for a community development fund, which Rybinski said makes it different from other banks because it has a “very conscious commitment to supporting community initiative.”

Hope’s Home opened in March 2013.
