Raiders bust Broncos in a shootout

Nov 15, 2014 | 10:03 PM

Simon Strasky’s shootout goal ended four games of frustration for the Prince Albert Raiders. The sneaky forehand-backhand-top corner snipe in the fourth round of the shootout prompted the mass Raider celebration at centre ice as the losing streak ended with the 3-2 victory and with it proof there can be success through hard work and sticking to the game plan.

The night got off to a rocking start as heavyweights MacKenzie Stewart of the Raiders and Tanner LeSann of the Broncos stood toe-to-toe in and swung for the fences in a fight that had the crowd and both benches on their feet just 9-seconds after the opening face off.

The game remained scoreless until the 6-minute mark of the second perido when Reid Gardiner jammed home a deflected centreing pass from Stransky, but Prince Albert product Jordan Harris tied the game just 32 seconds later on a one time blast from the point.

Coda Gordon’s surprising snap shot from the right wing circle at 19:00 of the second period gave the Broncos the lead after 40 minutes.

However the Raiders dominated the third period outshooting the trap happy Broncos 16-5 and Gardiner’s sizzling snap shot in the top corner on Bronco goaile Landon Bow.at the midway point of the third period as the Humboldt native the Swift Current defense set the stage for the dramatic ending. Sransky also assisted on that goal.

The Raiders almost won it seconds into overtime with Bow out of the net as the puck pinballed off a Bronco defenseman and just missed the open cage. Sawyer Lange had the puck bounce over his stick with a gaping opening at the side of the Bronco net moments later.

Gordon opened the shootout with a slick move on Rylan Parenteau and with the game on the line. Craig Leverton of Debden dangled and beat Bow through the legs to send the shootout ot a fourth round..

Parenteau’s third straight shootout stop to go along with 28 through regulation and overtime, set the stage for Stransky who confidently canned the winner.

The Raiders outshot the Broncos 34-30 and killed off both Bronco power plays which was operating at a staggering 36.6 percent on home ice making it 25 straight kills.

The return match is Friday in Prince Albert.
