Saskatoon WW1 veterans memorialized in book

Nov 6, 2014 | 10:43 AM

A special book featuring Saskatoon veterans of the First World War will be unveiled Thursday evening.

The First World War Book of Remembrance is a gift to the city from the Military Institute of Saskatoon. City Archivist Jeff O’Brien said the book features 622 names and another 69 from the University of Saskatchewan who gave their lives during the war.

“A lot of war memorials of the First World War now tend to memorialize the war. This, is a war memorial but it’s purpose is to memorialize individuals.”

The Great War began in 1914. O’Brien said the first wave of soldiers in Saskatoon went over soon after.

“The first group of men to go on the trains leaving Saskatoon, left inside ten days of war being declared,” O’Brien said adding the trains were actually delayed by the huge crowds of people who came to see the soldiers off.

“The uptake to enlist was huge in Saskatoon. People here were behind the war effort pretty much 100 per cent.”

The book will be unveiled at the City Archives building at 224 Cardinal Crescent at 5:45 p.m.  It will then spend a week on display at city hall from Nov. 10th to 14th.
