SGI not following Manitoba’s lead for winter tires

With the first taste of winter driving across Saskatchewan people might be looking towards Manitoba for direction when it comes to winter tires.

Manitoba Public Insurance(MPI) rolled out the Winter Tire Program in September to motivate more residents to purchase winter tires and reduce their risks on the snowy roads. The program provides low-interest financing at prime plus two per cent, on up to $2,000 per vehicle.

MPI’s website explained the financing can be used for the “purchase of qualifying winter tires and associated costs from participating retailers.”

“We have heard about it and we know about the program but we are not currently looking at a program like that,” SGI assistant vice-president of traffic safety service Kwei Quaye explained on the Brent Loucks Show Monday morning.

Quaye explained SGI recommends the use of winter tires and is aware they improve traction.

“Which improves the ability to stop the vehicle or maneuver the vehicle around cars especially,” he said.

“We will continue to promote this through educational programs.”

When asked about a rate reduction system where good drivers with winter tires could get a lower insurance rate, Quaye said for now SGI will stick with education.

“We believe that making the choice to use the winter tire itself provides an added safety benefit to the user,” he said.

“In that sense it approves the ability to have a safe driving record and be part of our Safe Driver Recognition program.”

Quaye added that if you do not have winter tires it is important that tires are properly maintained and all drivers recognize road conditions and slow down.

SGI does not keep statistics on how many people use winter tires.
