U of S hosts National Mining Competition

Nov 2, 2014 | 3:02 PM

A first-of-its-kind competition is giving teams of students from around the world a chance to rub elbows with mining industry heavyweights.

The National Mining Competion entered it’s last day Sunday at the University of Sasktchewan (U of S). This is the first year for the event, which was organized and run entirely by U of S students.

The contest sees teams of delegates asked to come up with plans in a scenario involving a company that owns three mines. The students have to make a case for which should stay open, which should close or which should expand or scale back.

Dean Villeneuve, a management student at the U of S who helped organize the event, explained that the teams are expected to produce a detailed presentation within a 36-hour timeframe.

“That involves going through a financial analysis incorporating the company’s values, incorporating what happens in the community and ultimately, compiling that all together and coming up with a final recommendation,” he said.

And, just in case the tight timeline wasn’t enough pressure; the competitors are then required to make a final presentation to a panel of industry heavyweights who serve as judges.

“We have people from Shell, K + S, Alan Auld Group who is coming here.  PotashCorp, Cameco — you name the mining companies in this area and they’re here,” said Villeneuve.

The contest features 64 delegates making up 16 teams from universities in Canada, the U.S., the U.K., Germany and India.
