Regina hair stylist cuts last locks after nearly six decades

Just imagine the gossip he could tell after 56 years of styling and cutting hair.

Seventy-six-year-old Eugene Herman has finally hung up the clippers and curlers at Xclusive Hair Salon on Rae Street in south Regina.

He said cutting his last head of hair “was wonderful” after doing  just that since 1958, when he graduated from Marvel Beauty School in Saskatoon.  He moved to Regina a few years later and has been in the Queen City ever since.

Herman thought he would retire at 60 or 65 like most everyone else, but when that time came he just felt like carrying on. That finally changed in June, when he felt the time had come.

“I’m going miss the customers and the girls I work with, but I’m not going to miss getting up in the morning”.

He said he has enjoyed all the years of work, except perhaps one decade of the almost six he has been a stylist.

“Its all been good other than the 70s when the hairstyles were huge and big,” he said.

So what does he plan to do now? Herman said he will just play that by ear one day at a time.

As for the gossip he has accumulated in all those years, he won’t be telling any of his secrets any time soon – also the trait of a good hairstylist.
