Riders using bye-week to heal wounds, clear minds

Oct 27, 2014 | 5:58 PM

Not only will this bye-week allow the Riders some time to heal physically, but mentally as well.

“I think a lot of teams would love to have a bye-week now, instead of the first round of the playoffs, just to get some of your guys back,” said head coach Corey Chamblin.

The Riders have a number of players dealing with various injuries including Darian Durant, Weston Dressler, Chris Best, Brendon LaBatte, and Anthony Allen, plus others on the team are bumped and bruised.

“We’ve played maybe 14, 15 week straight? That’s tough for anybody to do,” said running back Keith Toston.

This is the second bye-week of the season, a luxury all teams in the CFL have now with nine teams once again in the league.

Players know from experience how much a break like this can help a team.

“I know when we came back from the bye-week after a tough loss versus Toronto at the start of the year. We came back and ripped off seven in a row,” said defensive end Ricky Foley. “So, you got to have that belief.”

Foley feels the break isn’t just for the players either.

“I think it will be good for the coaches. I believe 100 per cent in them. They’re going to come back and see stuff that we can do,” he said.

Before the bye-week the coaching staff had talked about taking a few days off. That is likely still the plan, but the hard work to get this team back on track will continue for yet another week.
