Gardiner’s 3 points lifts Mintos over Maulers

For the first time this year, the Prince Albert Mintos put back-to-back wins together with a 5-2 win Saturday over the Yorkton Maulers.

On Thursday, the Mintos beat the Battlefords Stars in a gritty 2-1 road win. The two wins put the Mintos record to 5-3-2 on the year.

Mintos forward Erik Gardiner had a goal and two assists in the victor, while captain Brody Reimer led the way booth in the dressing room and on the score sheet with a goal and an assist.

Summary

The Maulers took an early lead as just 1:28 into the game, McKenzie Welke scored on a rebound to draw first blood.

But Reimer would answer with a seeing-eye point shot with a minute left in the period to knot the game at 1-1 heading into the second.

The Mintos then picked up two power play goals in the second off the sticks of Josh Roberts and defenceman Jake Hobson to take a 3-1 lead. Maulers forward Damian Bentz would make the game interesting as he cut the Mintos lead to 3-2 heading into the third.

Brett Harasymuk scored midway through the third to give the Mintos a 4-2 lead.

Mintos forward Erik Gardiner scored an empty net goal in the final minute for the 5-2 final score.

Reed Gunville and defenceman Kade Mosimann had two assists each in the game to help the Mintos along.

Mintos goaltender Derrick Hucul made 23 saves on 25 shots for his second win of the year.

Mauler tender Carter Phair made 26 saves in a losing effort.

The Mintos will play the Swift Current Legionnaires on Sunday at 1:30 p.m. at the Art Hauser Centre.
