Warriors hand Raiders 4th straight loss

Oct 16, 2014 | 3:46 AM

The Warriors took advantage of numerous turnovers posting a 5-3 win over the Raiders in Moose Jaw.

Overage winger Jack Rodewald got the 3,038 Mosaic Place fans on their feet in the final minute of the first period blasting a high slot screen shot past Raider goalie Nick McBride.

The Warriors got another two quick goals in the second period when what should have been a routine clear out of the PA zone was a turnover at the blueline. Tyler Brown fed Brayden Point with a perfect back door feed and the Warrior captain whipped a wrister into the top corner at 4:01.

Just over a minute later, Raider defenseman MacKenze Stewart was the victim of incidental neutral zone contact resulting in an odd man rush with Torrin White tapping in a rebound to give Moose Jaw a 3-0 lead. However, Josh Morrissey’s seeing-eye wrister through a screen from the left point found the top corner past Warriors netminder Zach Sawchenko pulling PA to within two goals heading to the final period.

The Raiders pressured in the early going of the final frame until a turnover in the PA zone allowed Rodewald to set up rookie Noah Gregor for a tap in goal at 1:43 and the Warriors extended the lead to 5-1 less than 5-minutes later on Tanner Eberle’s breakaway, the result of a turnover at the Warrior blueline.

The Raiders started to mount a comeback at 11:04 when Brendan Guhle scored his second of the season on a deflection off a Moose Jaw defender. Reid Gardiner’s 5th of the season on a power move to the net converting his own pass off Craig Leverton’s foot less then two minutes later. Gardiner was the Raiders best player on the night also picking up an assist on Morrissey’s goal.

The Raiders were denied a pivotal goal moments later when Morrissey’s point blast and the rebound went off opposite posts and neither team could find the net the rest of the way as McBride robbed Point on a breakaway for the third time this season.

The Raiders went 0-4 on the power play while being outshot 42-26. They killed off both Warrior power plays.
Assistant Coach Kelly Guard told the 900 CKBI post game show audience there were simply too many turnovers and the Raiders need to simplify their game as players are complicating matters by trying to do too much with the puck and making costly turnovers.

The Raiders will try to snap out of a four game losing streak Friday night at home against the Edmonton Oil Kings. The rematch against last season’s first round playoff opponent and defending Memorial Cup champion is the opener of a five game home stand.

All Raider games can be heard on 900 CKBI.
