Saskatoon teen aims for finals at Vegas legends race

AJ Morrison has his sights on the final at a legends car race in Las Vegas.

The 16-year-old boy from Saskatoon will compete in the most anticipated legends race in North America on Oct. 16 with a chance at the final the following day.

Competing in the semi-pro division against people aged 40 and under, Morrison drives a scaled down version of a 1930s hotrod with a Yamaha motorcycle engine. Drivers are not allowed to soup up their cars.

“I guess kids that are my age, we’ve got less fear so we tend to do a little stupider things; things that aren’t as smart,” he said, laughing.

The Holy Cross High School student started driving a go-kart before transitioning to a legends car two years ago.

At the Mike and Ike Sask Series last month, Morrison and his teammate, Blake Erb, who races at the pro level, won their championships. The win means Morrison could advance to pro. He’ll make that decision over the winter.

The Bullring Asphalt Nationals in Las Vegas will be different than racing at home.

“I heard that it is an endless corner so it’s really fast and you’ve got to dive into corner number three until you feel like dying,” he said.

“In Saskatoon if you get a good corner, you could be doing 75 miles an hour and up but I heard Las Vegas is actually a faster track.”

Morrison said some kids dream about being astronauts but his dream is to be a NASCAR driver.

“Most racers start in legends. They start at the bottom and then go up. The opportunity, the experience just gets me excited,” he said.
