SGI seeks public input on Safe Driver Recognition Program

Oct 9, 2014 | 4:13 PM

SGI has set up an online survey to find out what its customers think of the Safe Driver Recognition Program.

Under the program that was instituted in 2002, drivers get positive points on their license with a safe driving record which entitles them to a discount on their car insurance. Things like at-fault crashes and breaking the law will result in negative points.

The survey will ask customer opinions about possible changes to the program, including:

Increasing the financial penalty for each demerit point, currently at $25 per point.
Increasing the maximum discount, currently at 20 per cent, but also increasing the maximum penalty or having a higher base rate.
Increasing the minimum cost of a crash before it garners demerit points
Giving demerit points out with speeding tickets.
Instituting a “platinum zone,” which would provide a cushion that would shield them from the effects of a future accident. For example, a driver in the platinum zone might be able to have one at-fault accident and one traffic offense before starting to lose part of their discount.
