Oct 2, 2014 | 7:42 AM

A growing Muslim community in Regina laid the foundation stones to its own mosque on Wednesday.

The place of worship will be located in east Regina and has been in the works for more than 25 years.

It is not the first mosque in the city, but it is the first one for the Ahmadiyya Muslim community.

Habib Rehman is the president of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Association Regina chapter. He has seen the membership grow from 10 to now 80. Those members will be funding the construction of the mosque.

“The ladies have sold their jewelry to fund this mosque. The men have done extra shifts so everybody has contributed in his or her own way,” Rehman explained.

National president of Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, Lal Khan Malik attended the ceremony on Wednesday. He says the mosque in Regina is not just for followers of Islam.

“Although we are building it, it belongs to God so it belongs to everyone. Everyone is welcome to use this facility for worship of God, it’s open to everyone.”

The new mosque is expected to be finished by 2016 and have enough room for 160 worshippers. The mosque will also have various offices, a child’s play area and prayer halls.

Construction of a mosque is also in the works in Saskatoon and there are plans to open a mosque in Lloydminster in the coming years.

The Ahmadiyya sect of Islam started in India and there are now Muslim Communities in over 200 countries. In Regina there are members from Pakistan, Bangladesh and African nations.
