Sask Rivers student enrollment sees steady increase

Sep 21, 2014 | 11:38 AM

Over the past couple of years the Saskatchewan Rivers School Division (SRSD) has seen a drop in student enrollment, but this year that’s changed.

Alan Nunn, superintendent of schools for the SRSD, said enrollment from Kindergarten to Grade 12 is a more than 8,200—up from last year.

With numbers continually coming in this month he said they’ve “heard of a few more students trickling in,” so this number will increase.

Pre-Kindergarten numbers won’t be coming in until later this month and French immersion numbers continue to remain strong with more growth every year, he added.

As for why they saw the change in enrollment numbers over previous years, Nunn has a few theories.

“We’re not entirely certain, movement into the city obviously and more families looking to get their children into school,” he said. “We’re door-to-door pickup for Pre-Kindergarten to Kindergarten, but we’re offering bussing right from Grade 1 to 8 this year. ”

This bussing initiative is new this year and just for the SRSD’ city schools. With this in mind he said it’s possible parents are seeing this as a good reason to enroll their children.

“We just thought it was time to do so; provide a good service to students for those who live a little distance away from the schools. It’s just a nice convenience for parents and students both,” he said.

Messages left with the Prince Albert Catholic School Division were not returned before publication.
