Harvest behind thanks to cold, wet weather

Sep 18, 2014 | 1:59 PM

Harvest in Saskatchewan is way behind for this time of year thanks to the recent cold, wet weather.

According to this week’s crop report from Saskatchewan Agriculture, Saskatchewan farmers are 20 per cent behind the five-year average for combining.

Twenty-three percent of this year’s crop has been combined, which is well behind the five-year average of 43 per cent.

Forty-three percent of the crop is ready to be straight-cut or swathed.

The southwest portion of the province is the furthest along at 31 per cent.

The northeastern region has 27 per cent combined, which is up from 11 per cent last week.

The southeastern region has 26 per cent combined, the west-central region is at 24 per cent and the northwestern region is at 19 per cent.

Disease and weather-related issues persist in some areas, and the frost last week caused some damage to crops.

Out of the crops that have already been harvested, 71 per cent of field peas are expected to fall within the top two quality grades, 61 per cent of lentils and 79 per cent of durum is expected to be in the bottom two quality grades.
