Prince Albert gym accepting teams for 8-hour spinning fundraiser

Spinning is notorious for being a tough workout, but Goodlife Fitness is toning it down for a new fundraiser.

The Spin 4 Kids event involves teams of eight taking hour-long turns on a spin bike for a good cause.

“It isn’t meant to be a workout. There are some parts of the day where it is a workout, but there are some parts of the day where it’s like an easy ride. You don’t have to train for the event, just as long as you know how to ride a bike, you’re golden,” said Daniel Wasyliw, assistant general manager with Prince Albert’s Goodlife club.

All that spinning will eventually help children get active. The money raised through the national Spin 4 Kids, with more than 190 clubs participating, is passed on through grants to programs or activities for children.

“The money can be used towards anything to get kids active, but when they apply for the grant through teachers or the non profit organization they need to have a plan with how they’re going to use the money,” Wasyliw explained.

It started over a decade ago when a pediatrician in Newfoundland noticed childhood obesity increasing. This is the first year the Prince Albert club is joining in.

By joining in, they’ve opened up the path for schools or non-profits in the city to access up to $5,000 in grants through the Goodlife Kids Foundation, he said.

As for the event itself, there’s a lot of buzz around the gym in Prince Albert, Wasyliw said.

Staff has been busy fundraising by selling perogies, and another team has held bake sales. However, the biggest income has been through online donations.

On top of the fundraising, teams are encouraged to decorate their spin bikes in advance of the big day on March 1 to make it a fun event.

“Teams can actually come the day before and pimp out their bikes. So there are themes, one of our motivator teams is ‘Captain Crunch and the Cereal Killers,’ so they’re all coming up with a cereal box theme.

Considering it’s their first year, the Prince Albert club is doing impressively in the club standings. They’re currently in 13th place for funds raised out of the 194 clubs registered.

Teams will be accepted all the way through until March 1, even if people decide that morning they want to join in, Wasyliw said.

“We are gonna accept people that just want to spin, we are going to accept that and it’s going to be based per donation,” he said.

Anyone who wants to join in on March 1 can register online.
