Headrick celebrates radio milestone

Aug 18, 2011 | 6:31 AM

A lot can change in 25 years.

Neil Headrick has learned this during his quarter-century spent as the morning host for 900 CKBI radio in Prince Albert.

“Huge changes, primarily in technology. When I started, we were still playing the odd record. Those are big, black round things that spin around, by the way,” he said with his typical good humour.

Today, Headrick celebrates his anniversary with Rawlco Radio.

He is only the second morning announcer in the 70-year history of the program.

“Well J.J. Cennon, a living legend, by the way, was here 40 years and he was the first morning man on CKBI radio and I’m the second. I think in the broadcast industry, which is fairly transient, that’s somewhat of an anomaly,” Headrick said.

Over the years Headrick has interviewed and chatted with a long-list of notable people, including Buddy Knox, Gordie Howe, Johnny Bower and Pete Best.

He’s shared a meal with Wolfman Jack, who Headrick calls the “top of the heap” for someone in the radio business.

An interview this week will bring the 25 years full circle. The Saturday night before Headrick started the show on a Monday morning, he had to introduce Bobby Curtola. This week he will do another interview with Curtola before his upcoming show at the E.A. Rawlinson centre.

“It really doesn’t seem like 25 years,” Headrick said.

There are thousands of memories and he’s enjoyed it all, he said.

“I’ve really enjoyed it, even, believe it or not, getting up at 4 in the morning, which not something that a normal person should do. In fact when my kids were growing up … in their late teen years, I would be driving to work and I’d wave to them as they drove home.”
