Federal government no longer inspecting meat processing plants
The federal government is no longer inspecting provincial meat-processing plants in B.C., Saskatchewan and Manitoba, leaving the provincial government with the duty of conducting inspections on their behalf.
Scott Brown, with the Saskatchewan Agriculture Ministry, says they provincial government is making contact with the slaughter and processing plants in Saskatchewan. Eventually they'll all be consulted for what happens down the road.
“We’re talking business as usual, we will work our way through the process. But the outcome — which is safe, high quality food — is going to continue to be the same. We just have to adjust that process by which we get there,” said Brown. “The changes that we’re talking about here deal with less than five per cent of the meat slaughter and processing in Saskatchewan. Probably about 95 per cent of our meat in Saskatchewan comes from federally inspected facilities, and those aren’t impacted by this announcement.”
Besides talking with the affected business, Brown says there will be discussions with the Canadian Food Inspection Agency and the federal government before any new process is put in place.
