Chief Lonechild likely to file suit next week

The suspended Chief of the Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations extended an olive branch on Tuesday.

Chief Guy Lonechild is asking his executive council to admit they did not follow procedure when suspending him.

But he will sue the FSIN sometime next week if that doesn't happen.

Lonechild and six employees were suspended with pay after he walked out of an Indian government commission meeting last week.

“Our preliminary objections identified that there was problems with the grounds in which a vote of non-confidence would proceed,” said Lonechild.

Lonechild says the council broke FSIN rules by not holding an elders council review in his absence.

But that non confidence vote is set to go Sept. 1. It all stems from a drunk driving charge before he was elected chief.

But Lonechild thinks there are other reasons behind the suspension such as the governance challenges for the Saskatchewan Indian Gaming Authority.

He said he's uncomfortable with Morely Watson taking over as interim Chief citing his track record while in charge of the First Nations University of Canada.
