Residents cautious after sexual assault in Saskatoon park

Aug 5, 2011 | 7:24 AM

The paddling pool in Saskatoon’s Caswell Hill neighbourhood sits empty while a sign reading “Sorry we are closed today” is taped on the recreational centre in Ashworth Holmes Park — the site of a sexual assault one week ago.

According to some residents, the sign is the only indication that anything happened in the park.

On Thursday, July 28, a 19-year-old city employee was attacked in broad daylight, around 10 a.m.

The community association held a meeting on Tuesday, August 2, where they shared a sketch of the suspect.

News Talk Radio spoke to a woman named Diane who didn't feel comfortable giving her last name, but lives right across from Ashworth Holmes Park.

Diane says that not all residents were informed of the attack.

“It seems like a lot of things are being kept mum, and that’s sad. I think my neighbour is going to print off sketches and put them in mailboxes,” Diane said, adding that the attack has made her more cautious.

“I think you’re more aware of what’s going on around you when something like this happens,” said Diane.

According to Stephanie — another Caswell Hill resident who also lives across the street from the park — many people in the area believe the suspect may live in the neighbourhood.

Police are still searching for a man described as a six foot, 20 to 30-year-old First Nations male with a medium build.
