Guy Lonechild has been temporarily suspended from his duties as Chief of the Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations.
Lonechild said he received notice from vice-Chief Morley Watson, who is now interim chief.
It follows a hearing among chiefs Thursday to determine whether Lonechild should face a vote of non-confidence over his drunk driving conviction.
Lonechild calls the action lawless, and is talking with lawyers now to fight back.
