Weldon Ferry options to be considered

Aug 4, 2011 | 11:41 AM

The province is investigating options for the Weldon Ferry and Hwy. 302, which has been closed since May.

According to the Saskatchewan Ministry of Highways, a consultant geotechnical company is working on analyzing the land slide and looking at options for repairing the road and possibly creating a temporary access.

Doug Wakabayashi with the ministry said that the consultant group will be working out in the area over the next few weeks. He said a report is expected from them by mid-August.

“Part of the work the consultant is doing is what might exist for options for providing interim access to the ferry,” he said.

“Having said that, I’d caution that it may very well be the case that there are no options. We don’t want to get any hopes up but we will investigate what exists.”

Doug said the consultants are expected to complete their report in the next weeks and the province is expected to begin its analysis by Aug. 19.

“The consultant is going to identify what if any options exist for interim access, then we have to look at costs, and the other thing is time,” he said.

“Let’s say it takes two months to do something then you’re almost into the time when you’re shutting down the ferry anyways.”

He said that any recommendations put forward by the company would be seriously considered.
