UPDATE: One injured in Big River area storm

Aug 1, 2011 | 9:12 AM

One person is facing potential life-threatening injuries after last night’s storm.

Victor Dorval owns Poplar Point Resort. He said it is his brother who sustained injuries – he was hit in the head by a tree and they are not sure if he is going to make.

With all the damage incurred by the storm, just getting him help was an issue.

“We couldn’t get him out, we were treed-in here with all the trees and we had to take him out by boat,” he said.

RCMP earlier reported that only minor injuries were suffered in the incident.

Staff Sgt. Greg Abbott, with the RCMP, said with the damage the storm caused, it is lucky there were not any more injuries or even a fatality.

“There is thousands of dollars of damage and there was quite a number of campers in the campsite at the time so we were quite concerned,” he said.

Storm causes damage

Brian Bukoski, with Environment Canada, said it hit the Big River area, east of Meadow Lake.

Witnesses said it involved strong winds and golf-ball sized hail.

“Broken windows, at least three cars have windows broken and maybe six or eight trucks have their front windows (broken),” said Ed Tomanek, who lives at Turtle Lake Lodge.

He said power was knocked out and his big task for the day will be removing a tree from the near-by line.

Now, the task will be cleaning up the campground and unblocking the only road into the site.

Dorval lost the roof off his lodge. He said many cabins and vehicles sustained damage.

This is the second the big storm causing damage to blow through the area in the past month.
