Charles could be in charge of Roughriders run game

The last time Hugh Charles started a football game was 2009 when Wes Cates missed the first two games with injury. Charles has tried to stay patient since then waiting for his next oppurtunity.

The opportunity could come Saturday when the Saskatchewan Roughriders take on the Calgary Stampeders (7:30pm, Mosaic Stadium).

Cates appeared to injury his ankle when Montreal's Shea Emry grabbed him low late in last week's game and gave Cates leg an extra twist.

Hugh's huge fumble

Charles entered the game on the next drive and fumbled away the football, giving the Alouettes a chance to make a late comeback.

It was a mistake Charles says he's learned from, “You know I had a lot of things going on in my mind when it happened and after but I shook it off knowing we all make mistakes and I just won't let it happen again.”

Head Coach Greg Marshall says both he and offensive coordinator Doug Berry have talked to Charles about how important ball security is but adds the blame shouldn't fall solely on the fourth-year Riders shoulders.

“There were some other things that happened during the play that helped the fumble occur so we have to correct those as well but if Hugh's the guy who goes this week we expect big things from him.”

Charles chance

Back in 2009 when Charles was able to handle the running duties he scored three touchdowns in those two games and showed off his patented back flip touchdown celebration for the first time.

Charles however also fumbled twice in those two games but he's set for the next opportunity if it comes his way this week.

“I got to look at it as I'm just doing my job and in the future letting everybody else see that I can be the starter and get the job done and fill in big shoes such as Wes Cates' whenever he's out.”
