Take Care in the Heat

Jul 20, 2011 | 8:37 AM

If you like the heat, then this week you’ll get what you’ve been waiting for. Environment Canada is forecasting temperatures to reach 40 Celsius with the humidity. But for many people with health conditions, seniors, young children, people with communication problems or those with no place to call home, will find it quite unbearable.

The simplest remedy is to stay in the air-conditioned indoors. Find a cool place like a shopping center, library or someone else’s home if that’s not easily accessible. Drink plenty of good old fashioned water. Please check on neighbors and friends so that they are okay during the anticipated heat wave.

How to spot a heat emergency?
 Increased thirst
 Dizziness or fatigue
 Nausea and vomiting
 Blurred vision
 Unsteady balance
 Excessive sweating
 Cramps in muscles

What to do?
 Cool the person off
 If possible encourage them to drink water
 If symptoms persist after seeking a cool location, then seek emergency medical treatment at a walk in clinic or call paramedics
 If the person is found unconscious with hot dry sick get immediate medical assistance
