Born buffalo heads across the province

Jul 20, 2011 | 6:58 AM

As national parks celebrate their centennial and provincial parks celebrate 80 years Askiy Productions saw the perfect opportunity to celebrate another aspect of the local landscape.

Born Buffalo is a play about the spirit of the buffalo in a fun, modern-day setting, said Alanis King, writer and artistic producer of Born Buffalo.

The play and drama workshop are on a national and provincial parks tour stopping at Waskesiu in Prince Albert National park and Pre Cam Community School in La Ronge.

In lieu of the park’s anniversaries it seemed really fitting to incorporate some cross-cultural sharing, King said.

“We tour to a lot of Saskatchewan First Nations and nearby centers, but we’ve never taken our work to parks … The response has been really positive and really welcoming and it seemed really fitting because we have a captive audience in all those parks,” King said.

Born Buffalo is about a buffalo that lives in a city zoo until she speaks to a couple of Grade 10 students who help her find her herd.

“We want to make it a fun kind of way to give an homage to the buffalo and the spirit of the buffalo and have the children understand a bit more how the buffalo interact with each other,” King said.

“The buffalo has a strong connection to the aboriginal people and that’s why when the threat of extinction happened there was the dual purpose that maybe the aboriginal people might not survive.”

The drama workshops are geared toward children five and older and are free of charge.
