Motorcycle unit rolled through Prince Albert

RCMP motorcycles were spotted recently in Prince Albert, when they were on a recent traffic enforcement blitz.

They are part of the RCMP’s Regional Traffic Service, and were part of a roving traffic enforcement team that was going throughout the northeastern cities is Saskatchewan.

According to Sgt. Dale Morgan, the RCMP’s motorcycle program co-ordinator, they were in Prince Albert for four days around the Canada Day weekend.

During that time, the handed out more than 200 traffic violations, including four impaired driving charges.

“It justified us being there, and based on the numbers I can certainly see that it would be feasible to go up there again,” Morgan said.

He explained that the province has only four motorcycle units, but are hoping to slowly increase that number and station permanent units at various detachments, including Prince Albert.

Morgan said the reason is that motorcycles have certain advantages over regular police vehicle, especially during traffic stops.

“Where we have found that the bikes tend to have an enforcement advantage, is inside the communities and inside the medium markets where turning around is a problem with a police car,” he said.

Morgan said with the success of the Canada Day weekend, they would be considering another enforcement move this summer.
