Muskoday Will Host 2013 SK Indigenous Games

Jul 14, 2011 | 12:35 PM

Muskoday First Nation is excited to announce that they have received the opportunity to host the 2013 First Nation Saskatchewan Summer Games.

These games will bring over 3000 athletes to our region as we partner with the town of Birch Hills and the City of Prince Albert to host four different age categories in the core sports of Soccer, Softball, Archery, Athletics (Track & Field and Cross Country) and canoeing.

Along with the sports we will be offering two sites that will show case our culture identity through daily entertainment at the Kinsmen Park in Prince Albert and Muskoday’s Veterans Park.

The process was a very exciting and new experience for Muskoday as this was our first time bidding for the games. We were up against four other bids from communities in the province and we prevailed as the Chiefs at the recent FSIN assembly in Onion Lake passed the resolution for the Games to be hosted by Muskoday.

The process went through a letter of intent that was submitted last fall, followed up by a bid package in January. Then three representatives appointed by the FSIN Sport, Culture, Youth and Recreation board (FSIN SCRYB) toured the five sites and scored each site accordingly. This was followed up by the SCRYB motion to accept the results, sent to the FSIN Education Commission, where they forwarded their approval to the Chief’s of Saskatchewan for ratification.

The bid committee is very excited about the recent news and has already started the process of incorporating as a not-for-profit organization. We have also started preparing the Muskoday sites for our 3000 guest as our Pow Wow ground and Memorial site is getting an extensive renovation to the grounds and the food service area this summer. We are also working on the recreation site to prepare the trails for the archery and cross country competitions and an area is being prepared for our floatable canoe dock.

Our partnership between Prince Albert and Birch Hills have always been very strong and will be stronger as we look forward to bringing one of the biggest gatherings to Prince Albert and area since the North American Indigenous Games were hosted in the region in 1993. We look forward to working with both communities as we strive to make these Games the best our athletes have ever seen.
In the spirit of youth,
