UPDATED: Kim Walker jailed another 18 months

Jul 13, 2011 | 11:31 AM

Kim Walker has been sentenced to eight years for shooting and killing James Hayward in 2003.

The judge has decided Walker would get six-and-a-half years for time already served, so he has another year-and-a-half behind bars.

Walker always maintained he shot Hayward to save his 16-year-old daughter from a life of drug addiction.

Families react

“As long as he’s back in jail I’m okay,” said Lorie Getty, James Hayward’s mother.

Getty says the sentence isn’t the justice her son deserves, but she's glad to see Kim Walker heading back to jail for another year and a half.

Walker, 54, says Hayward had gotten his daughter Jadah hooked on drugs and Walker feared for his life.

Today Jadah is clean and the family just wants to start re-building.

“We’re very over the situation. We’re ready to move on,” said Jadah.

Meanwhile, Lorie Getty admits the two trials have consumed her life the last eight years, she reluctantly admits it could be hard to move on.

“I promised my family that I would get on with my life, and I’m going to keep that promise,” said Getty.

Getty says that no jail term will ever bring her son back.

The Crown had been looking for an 11 year sentence. The defence had been asking for time served.
