Lac La Ronge, Rapid River, and Churchill River advisory

Jul 13, 2011 | 11:04 AM

The Dam at Lac La Ronge is not at a hazardous level, but Ron Crush, acting supervisor for the Northwest Operations Branch of the Saskatchewan Watershed Authority, is advising people to be cautious.

“I wouldn’t call it dangerous. It’s not levels that haven’t been experienced in past periods, it’s just that the lake is at the top of its desirable operating range,” Crush said.

Rain brought the Lac La Ronge Dam to capacity and caused the need for both bays to be fully open, said Crush.

Since opening the bays, Crush said the water levels have been rising, but the level at the Lake seems to leveled out.

“Given the precipitation that we’ve had and the unusual events that have been occurring this year across the province we thought it was necessary to put that advisory out.”

The advisory includes the whole of Lac La Ronge and the Rapid River going into the Churchill River system. Crush said these will see higher flows for some period of time but on the Lake itself activities like boating should be fine.

Crush said more rain would increase water levels. According to Environment Canada’s forecast for the area there is a chance of rain over the next couple days.
