Larger trucks soon to be rolling on Sask. Highways

The provincial government is now allowing heavier and longer transport trucks on Saskatchewan highways.

The looser restrictions are the result of a deal signed between Saskatchewan, Alberta and B.C. governments.

It may be viewed as good news for the transport industry, but some politicians are worried about the effects it may have.

Battlefords MLA Len Taylor said the government went through this process way too quietly, which brings up issues with trucking and public safety.

“We need to have both of those issues going hand in hand. If we are going to improve or change the waits, loads and lengths that we are allowing on our major highways, then we also better make sure we have the infrastructure to support that and we better make sure that public safety is secured.”

There should have been more discussion before it went through, Taylor said.

“I think what should have happened was some information provided to the public and some general consolation with someone other than the trucking industry.”

Taylor said the minister of highways should put forward information showing that the highways can handle the heavier loads, without causing a threat to public safety.
