Paddockwood celebrates 100 years

Jul 9, 2011 | 7:35 AM

A weekend of entertainment and good company is underway in Paddockwood.

This weekend it the Paddockwood 100 Reunion.

“The weekend is going to be all inclusive entertainment and interesting type of a weekend, in the fact that not only is it the anniversary of the community of Paddockwood, but it’s also a reunion weekend for Paddockwood West country music show,” said Larry Krause, event spokesman.

The excitement kicked-off Friday night with Paddockwood West, the country music show that was cancelled a few years ago. While they are not bringing it back permanently, Krause said it was the longest running annual country music show in the province. This year they have a variety of performers from years past, including the long-time house band.

The night ended with a bang as fireworks lit the sky.

Events start up again today with a pancake breakfast and a parade at 11 a.m. Paddockwood West hits the stage again tonight. Another big one not to miss is the cake cutting Sunday at 1 p.m., he said. They are some of the many activities going on throughout the three days.

It took a lot of work from a variety of different groups in the community, including the Elks, the Legion and the arena board to make the event happen, Krause said.

“There’s a lot of people that worked behind the scenes and you can’t do anything like this, especially in a small community without an awful lot of help from a lot of people that feel it’s important to volunteer for it,” he said, adding the committee came together late last year to start working on it.

With all the work has come a great deal of interest. The committee advertised across Western Canada and even into the territories – they sparked a great deal of interest.

“I guess weather conditions and people’s availability is going to determine how much of that is actually going to translate into people in the park,” he said, adding they are hoping for a big turnout.

Krause suggests once people arrive, they head to either the Seniors’ Hall or the Elks Hall. There they can pick up a brochure full of events that are going on.

“(You’re) not going to have a heck of a lot of time wondering what to do,” he said.

The weather should not be a problem either, he said, all events take place under a roof.

“If all of a sudden it is spitting a little bit of rain, don’t let it hold you back because all of those contingents have been covered.”
