Cumberland House road opened

The northeastern Saskatchewan community of Cumberland House is no longer trapped by flood waters.

On Wednesday the main road, Highway 123, was underwater, a major concern according to Cumberland House Mayor Andy McKay.

“It's the only road leading in and out of our community and we would have been isolated if it was for an extended period of time,” said McKay.

However, the town’s water woes may not yet be a thing of the past. McKay noted the road could flood again.

“If there is a lot of precipitation in Alberta and Saskatchewan, I guess the water would probably be going over that highway once again.”

The residents of Cumberland House are building dykes in low-lying areas and stocking up on food and supplies in the event the water returns.

McKay said the people love the town and don't want to leave, even if the water were to rise again.

“They've decided to stay here during the high waters and they're happy here,” said McKay.
