Time to pay your taxes

Today is the last day to pay 2011 municipal taxes before incurring penalties.

Tax notices based on the updated tax rate were mailed out in May.

As of Tuesday night about 15 per cent of residents still had not yet paid their taxes. That could mean long line ups at city hall.

Because of this, the city is reminding residents that there are other options to hand-delivering you tax notice to City Hall.

Residents are able to mail post-dated cheques prior to the deadline, saving time and interest. They’re also able to pay online after setting it up with their bank and using the house’s role number as the payable account.

There’s also the option to pay early in January, which results in a modest discount. Finally residents can apply to the Tax Installment Payment Plan, which begin is January and withdraws taxes in smaller monthly payments.

Bills can only be paid in person until 4:30 p.m., when City Hall closes.
