Celebrating Canada Day

Friday is Canada's birthday and there is a lot to see and do in Prince Albert and in the surrounding area.

In the city, events begin with a veterans’ march that leaves Kinsmen Arena at 12:45 p.m.

Veterans are an important part of Canada Day, said Grant Bennett, Canada Day Chair for the Legion.

“It was sad when we saw our last World War one veteran (die) because that was the end of an era there.

And the time will eventually come when will be honouring the last surviving World War two (veteran),” he said.

The party gets going in Kinsmen Park at 1 p.m. with kids’ games, bingo and food booths.

“There is going to be lots of food and flags given out to the children and adults that want to wave a flag on Canada Day,” Bennett said.

Then people can head down to the river bank at 4:30 p.m. for activities organized the by Prince Albert Multicultural Council.

In Prince Albert we can truly celebrate Canada’s multicultural heritage, said Marge Nainaar, with the organizing committee.

“When you walk on the streets today, you see people from different cultures, that didn’t happen 25 years ago,” she said.

There will be entertainment and food booths along the river near the band shelter and fireworks are scheduled to start at 10:30 p.m.

For those looking to venture out there will be celebrations at the Nipawin Museum, with demonstrations for steam operated lumber sawing, well drilling the old way, grinding flour, rope making, clay oven baking and displays of vintage motors and tractors.

There will also be entertainment throughout the day and at 3 p.m., a cake cutting for Canada’s birthday.

It’s also a free day for people to visit Canada’s national park and Prince Albert National Park is no exception.

There are lots of plans underway for the party in Waskesiu. It starts 8 a.m. with a pancake breakfast at Community Hall and at 9 a.m. there is bike decorating and face painting near the tennis courts.

At noon there is a parade and in the afternoon there will be a showing of the Mantracker episode filmed in the park.

Throughout the afternoon there is a family beer garden with live music and food concession.
