Souris River water level near Oxbow drops 3 feet

Jun 28, 2011 | 6:45 AM

People living along the Souris River near Oxbow are wondering if the valley will ever be the same.

At its worst point last week the river pushed 30 feet past its banks, swallowing up a number of homes.

Carole Pott checks on her home two or three times a day. She can’t get very close because her brand new home is now surrounded by rushing water.

It’s hard for her to talk about what has happened.

“It was never ever supposed to flood down here” she says.

She thought that her home was high enough that it wouldn’t be affected so when the RM office initiated an evacuation of the area on June 19, she went to help neighbours who were closer to the river.

The water ended up filling the first floor of her house.

“You really know how many friends and neighbours you have after something like this”.

Other homes had water right up to the roof.

“There isn’t anyone here who wouldn’t want to come back on the river” says Pott.

“Whether it will be possible or not with loss of homes is hard to tell”.

Oxbow is approximately 63 kilometres northeast of Estevan.
