Saskatoon police work on preventing sudden deaths in cells
Measures are being taken to prevent future sudden deaths in Saskatoon Police cells. Trained medical staff will now be on hand 12 hours a day.
Police Chief Clive Weighill calls it a good step forward. But only a short term fix.
“We’re working on a long-term plan to create a wellness centre in Saskatoon that will be secure so that we can take people there that may even be a bit rowdy,” explained Weighill. “But we would have a more secure place that we can take them to so that they are not put into a cell block where they can get the proper health care that they need and a proper follow-up that they need.”
The pilot is a joint initiative between the Saskatoon health region, Saskatoon Police and the Saskatchewan Federation of Indian Nations, and the Saskatoon Tribal Council. It will be launched July first.
