Alberta oil worker in limbo after flooding

Jun 28, 2011 | 2:00 PM

An oil worker who came in from Alberta says he’s a victim of flooding, but he’s not been treated that way.

Kevin Henry arrived in Weyburn just before the town was hit by a devastating flood. He had been hired on in the oil patch with accommodations provided by the employer. Soon after he arrived he was told work was delayed because of the water and that his accommodations would end.

Henry spent four days with other flood victims at the evacuation centre in Weyburn but after those days he was told he shouldn’t be there. He said he was told his homeless situation was not directly caused by flooding.

Then he went looking for work outside the flooded oil patch.

“They brought in all these restoration companies from out of town,” he said. “But they won’t hire me because of my Alberta address”.

He’s having further trouble with unemployment again because of address issues.

“Everyone got taken care of but me, with an Alberta address I don’t qualify for any of this.”

He said he put his last dollar into coming to Saskatchewan for work this summer and now he’s living in his van in the Wal-Mart parking lot.
