Rainfall causing states of emergency

Jun 18, 2011 | 7:23 AM

At least three communities declared states of emergency after excessive rainfall yesterday.

About four inches of rainfall has added the City of Weyburn to that list.

An electrical failure at the city's waste water treatment plant has the city asking residents to collect drinking water and a boil water advisory has been issued.

For the second time this spring, a state of emergency has been declared in Radville. This time is said to be worst then the first.

Yellow Grass also declared a state of emergency after a whack of rain overloaded their sewer systems.

Rainfall warnings in much of the south

Much of southern and central Saskatchewan, including Regina and Saskatoon are under rainfall warnings.

About 50 to 75 mm, or almost three inches of rain is expected to fall on the central and southern part of the province.

Environment Canada meteorologist Gregg Walters says the rain is expected to last into the weekend.

“It should generally last throughout (Friday) and into Saturday morning. It looks to be at least 24 hours that the rain is going to be occurring,” said Walters.

There is good news for the flood ravaged areas of southeast Saskatchewan near Estevan as only 40 mm, or an inch and a half of rain is forecasted for that area.

Radville under state of emergency

The town of Radville is under a state of emergency due to rain.

Cpl. Andrew Knowles with the RCMP says drivers are being asked to stay off several roads in the area, including Highway 28 north and south of Radville and Highway 377 between Radville and Ceylon.

Radville is 130 km south of Regina, in the Weyburn area.

Rain cancels events and school

The University of Regina's campus closed Friday after excessive rain backed up the school's sewer system.

Stock car racing in Saskatoon scheduled for Saturday at the Auto Clearing Speedway is off due to rain. The race has been rescheduled for 2 p.m. Sunday.

Also in Saskatoon, Friday night's thoroughbred racing at Marquis Downs is cancelled but is Saturday's races are still a go.

At Aboriginal day in Melfort chuckwagon and chariot races are cancelled, but the Stampeders concert  and demolition derby are still a go.
