Sask Rivers out of room, to build new facility

The Saskatchewan Rivers School Division (SRSD) is getting underway on a new project.

They have the tender out for a Support Services Centre, a new facility that will house their accounting, human resources, purchasing and technical services departments, said Mike Hurd, SRSD superintendent of facilities.

The tender for the building is out until the end of the month and the school division plans to start construction in July.

The reason for the new facility is simply a lack of space.

“We’re crowded here in the facility that we’re in now, in the Education Centre, and we’ve got some of our people that are out in the schools right now housed in the schools … People like speech and language, education psychologists — those people will move back in to the Ed. Centre once we provide room for them,” he said.

The issue extends to the purchasing and technical services too. Neither have the room they need to operate.

“Technology is always changing and evolving, our technology department has grown over the last few years and they don’t have the room they need, the facility isn’t set up for the kind of work they do,” Hurd said.

He said it just makes sense to move all of the business end of things to the new facility and keep them all together.

The senior administration will stay in the current building.

It won’t be a far move. They will stay on the same property at 520 13th St. W. and will be located directly west of the maintenance building.

Once the new facility is built, Hurd said they plan on moving their efforts to the Education Centre.

“We’re not fully accessible here,” he said explaining they plan to add an elevator, ramps and make the washrooms accessible.

“(We will also) renovate the space to bring back some of the people that we have had to disperse.”

The new Support Services Centre is expected to take anywhere from one year to 15 months to build and cost about $2.2 million. There are no estimates for the renovations to the Education Centre at this time.
