Mediator to write report if Sask. teachers don’t reach deal Friday

Jun 10, 2011 | 10:47 AM

If Saskatchewan teachers don't reach a deal with the province Friday, it will be up to a mediator.

Richard Hornung has been sitting in with the two sides, trying to help them reach a consensus.

If nothing is settled Friday, Hornung will write a report for the government with his recommendations.

His report is due by the end of the month. The teachers have promised not to strike before the report is done.

Mediator assigned last Wednesday

The Saskatchewan Teachers’ Federation (STF) and the provincial bargaining committee sat down on with Hornung on Wednesday for the first time.

Gwen Dueck of the STF said Wednesday that she feels the assignment of a mediator is proof that the actions of the teachers have had an impact and the value of the teachers is understood.

“The government is committed to taking teachers seriously and that gives us some hope,” she said.

Dueck added she’s happy they are able to get started so quickly and has faith that the third party will help both sides move forward.

Although she admits it isn’t the binding arbitration the STF wanted, Dueck remains confident.
