Public safety workers recognized

Jun 7, 2011 | 5:21 PM

Eighteen men and women who have spent much of their careers around Prince Albert working to maintain the public’s safety were honoured on Tuesday.

Workers from the Prince Albert Police Service, Saskatchewan Corrections and Corrections Services Canada were recipients of the Saskatchewan Protective Services Medal.

The honour recognizes staff who have given at least 25 years to the job and also have gone above and beyond the call of duty to provide better service or find innovations.

The award was presented by Saskatchewan minister of public safety and policing Yogi Huyghebaert and Lt.-Gov. Gordon Barnhart.

Huyghebaert said the award is just a small way of paying back the massive debt owed to these people.

“If you look at what happens around the province, whether it’s floods, fires, looking after our corrections centres, these people do an awful lot of work above and beyond the call of duty and this is just a slight way of recognizing what they do,” he said.

One local man given the award was PAPS Staff Sgt. Bill Chow. He was recognized for putting in 29 years to the job and his work in different roles on the force.

He said he didn’t get into policing looking for laurels but that it’s still nice to be recognized by one’s peers.

“If you’re doing it for recognition you’re probably in the profession for the wrong reason,” he said.

“It’s more about the will and the want to help people and to make a difference not only in your community but for people’s lives as well.”

In addition to Chow, the following also received the award:
